Metal Torrent

Metal Torrent, also known as Aa! Mujou! Setsuna! in Japan, is a vertical STG shooter with 3D graphics, published by Nintendo and released on their DSiWare platform for the Nintendo DSi. There does not appear to have ever been a physical release, and as such, this game may no longer be available once the Nintendo eShop for 3DS closes.


Gameplay Overview

The game is a vertical scrolling shooter featuring a chain mechanic, a cube collect mechanic, and eight stages, called phases, that can be either patterned or random. Difficulty can be controlled by this method, as well as by the ship selected at the beginning of each session.

Controls


  • Y: Fire special weapon
  • X: Fire blaster
  • A: Fire special weapon, and confirm menu selections
  • B: Fire blaster, and go back one menu screen
  • +Control Pad: Control ship movement, change menu pages, navigate menus
  • L,R: Change menu pages, not used during gameplay
  • START: Pause the game


Characters / Ships / Styles


There are two ships to choose from:

  • Accipiter: Also known as Tyoe A in the Cave STG forums, this ship is recommended for beginners by the in-game manual, as this ship has an "automated last stand defense system" which seems to work like an autobomb. It is red in colour.
  • Bateluer: Also known as TYpe B in the Cave STG forums, this ship is considered the expert ship, and does not autobomb. It is blue in colour. It has a slightly narrower fire pattern as well.


Weapons


While there are no pickup items that can change the weapons for the ship, each ship does contain its own loadout:

  • Accipiter: Wide shot pattern for Fire, and a pulse weapon for Special. The pulse weapon acts as a rechargeable bomb, and can also be manually triggered as long as the Special gauge is at least one-third full. Otherwise, it will not discharge, and if there is not enough energy to discharge the pulse weapon, the ship will be destroyed when hit.
  • Bateleur: Narrow spread pattern for Fire, and a narrow beam laser for Special. While you will always be able to fire either weapon, the Special gauge tracks the usage of the jamming field. Enemy bullets that enter the field slow considerably, making for easier evasion. Additionally, bullets fired by enemies destroyed with the beam laser will turn into cubes.


Items


This section describes any and all collectibles that you acquire in the game. An example being any Power Up items or Medals from Battle Garegga. Include secret items such as extra lives as well.

Version Differences

  • In Japan, this game was released as Aa! Mujou! Setsuna!. There are no other known differences apparent, besides language.
